Anytown: a telecommunications and gas failure simulation
In order to consider
the impact a telecoms and gas infrastructure failure in the UK would have upon
different sectors/organisations and groups as well as what the mass population
response would be, two workshops were held in the UK on the 16th and
19th of June 2014 utilizing the Anytown model. Anytown is a project
designed and led by London Resilience which has been used to bring together
experts from different sectors and organizations to discuss potential
implications of disruptions to the critical infrastructure on a fictional area - 'Anytown'. Mathew Hogan from
London Resilience states the aim of the Anytown project “is to raise awareness
of the consequences of infrastructure disruption with all emergency response
organizations in London – it’s a way of talking about disruption to London’s
infrastructure, which has developed over hundreds of years, into a simple model
which could be applicable anywhere in the UK.”[1]

Together with London Resilience and with industry partners from the National Grid, Vodafone, British Telecom and Southern Gas Networks we used our existing research on international case studies in New Zealand and Japan to frame the exercises and to take into account likely community responses. Our report arising from the event on Telecoms failure is provided below:-
